The Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:27 p.m. this day, in Room 705 La Promenade Building, the Chair, David Kilgour, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Navdeep Bains, Diane Bourgeois, Hon. Ed Broadbent, Peter Goldring, Hon. David Kilgour and Hon. Paddy Torsney.

 

Acting Members present: Roger Clavet for Diane Bourgeois and Jason Kenney for Stockwell Day.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Labour Congress: Steven Benedict, Director, International Department. As an Individual: Linda Freeman, Professor Political Science, Carleton University. Canadian International Development Agency: Sam Landon, Head of Aid, Canadian High Commision, Harare, Zimbabwe; Michel Lemelin, Director General, Eastern and Southern Africa Division, Africa and Middle East Branch. Oxfam Canada: Jim MacKinnon, Program Officer, South Africa. Amnesty International (Canada): Alex Neve, Secretary General, English Speaking Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs: Perry Calderwood, Director, Eastern and Southern Africa Division; Georges Flanagan Whalen, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and G8 Africa Action Plan Peace and Security Issues Desk Officer, Eastern and Southern Africa Division.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade on October 14, 2004, the Subcommittee held a briefing session on Canadian Policy in Zimbabwe.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

Navdeep Bains moved, — That the Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development hold a committee hearing on the Cuban government’s denial of human rights. In particular, that a representative from the Christian Labour Association (CLAC) be invited to appear before it .

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
