Statements by Members
A daily 15-minute period when Members may make brief statements on matters of national, regional or local importance.
2:15 p.m.
Oral Questions
A daily 45-minute period in the House during which oral questions are addressed to Ministers, and occasionally to committee chairs or members of the Board of Internal Economy.
3:00 p.m.
Deferred Recorded Divisions
Recorded divisions which are not held at the close of debate, but at a later time pursuant to various provisions in the Standing Orders or by a special order of the House.
Business of Supply
The process by which the government submits its projected annual expenditures for parliamentary approval.
Special committee on anti-corruption
Routine Proceedings
Business of a basic nature for which a daily period is set aside in the House.
Government Orders
Each sitting day, a substantial portion of the House’s time is devoted to the consideration of Government Orders, which include any item of business proposed by a Minister for consideration on a certain day.
Government Bills (Commons)
Bills concerned with public policy introduced by a Minister in the House.
Adjournment Proceedings
A 30-minute period prior to the daily adjournment, during which Members may raise matters they believe have not been dealt with satisfactorily.
Adjournment of the House

In committees, Members undertake studies on departmental spending, legislation and issues related to their mandate, after which they report their conclusions to the House.


A new session has now started. However, committees may not take up the responsibilities assigned to them until their members have been named and a chair is duly elected.

The Special Order adopted by the House on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 provides that the membership of the standing committees, other than the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, be constituted by each recognized party's whip depositing with the Clerk of the House the list of their members to serve on the committees no later than Tuesday, October 6, 2020, and that the Clerk of the House shall convene organizational meetings of standing committees no later than Monday, October 19, 2020, including, as necessary, during the period of adjournment beginning Friday, October 9, 2020, provided that the organizational meetings for the following committees shall be held no later than Friday, October 9, but no earlier than Thursday, October 8, 2020, and may be convened with 24 hours' notice: (i) the Standing Committee on Health, (ii) the Standing Committee on Finance, (iii) the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, (iv) the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, (v) the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, (vi) the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development, (vii) the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates, (viii) the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, (ix) the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations.
