The Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Hon. David Kilgour, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Navdeep Bains, Hon. Ed Broadbent, Stockwell Day, Peter Goldring and Hon. David Kilgour.

 

Acting Members present: Odina Desrochers for Diane Bourgeois, Jason Kenney for Stockwell Day and Russ Powers for Hon. Paddy Torsney.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marcus Pistor, Analyst. As Individual: Ana Gonzàlez, Spanish Language Interpreter.

 

Witnesses: Cuban Canadian Foundation: Ismael Sambra, President; Asdrubal Caner, Vice-president; Carmen Delia Llano, Representative; David Levy, Human Rights Director. Canadian Network on Cuba: Marvin Glass, Co-Chair. Christian Labour Association of Canada: Allan Horton, Ontario Provincial Solidarity Organizer; Frank Kooger, International Representative. Canadian Labour Congress: Steven Benedict, National Director, International Department. Canadian International Development Agency: Guillermo Rishchynski, Vice-President, Americas Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs : Jamal A Khohkar, Director General, Latin America and Caribbean Bureau; Louise Branch, Deputy Director, Central America and Cuba, Caribbean and Central America Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Subcommittee commenced its study of Denial of Human Rights in Cuba.
 

The witnesses from the Christian Labour Association of Canada, the Cuban Canadian Foundation, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Network on Cuba made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The witnesses from the Canadian International Development Agency and the Department of Foreign Affairs made statements and answered questions.

 

At 1:32 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
