The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Jason Kenney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Jason Kenney, Wajid Khan, Wayne Marston, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Dan McTeague for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee resumed its study on Human Rights in China.
 

The Subcommittee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — WHEREAS Maxim Charbonneau, a Canadian citizen, has been imprisoned in Haiti since July 2006, without any charges being laid against him;

WHEREAS in spite of pressure from the family and Ambassador Claude Boucher, there has been no movement on his file, it is proposed that:

The Subcommittee on International Human Rights invite the Haitian ambassador to Canada or his representative to appear as soon as possible before the Subcommittee to provide an update on the status of Maxim Charbonneau’s file.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair send a letter to Leonard J. Edwards, deputy Minister of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

At 12:39 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
