The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Jason Kenney, Wayne Marston, Ted Menzies, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That witnesses from Amnesty International and Rights and Democracy as well as Professor Charles Burton from Brook University be invited to appear to provide a briefing on Canada- China dialogue on human rights October 31, 2006.

 

It was agreed, — That witnesses from the Christian Labour Association of Canada, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Foundation for the Americas be invited to provide a briefing on the human rights situation in Cuba on November 7, 2006.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hold a meeting to follow-up on recommendations made in the committee report presented to the House during the 38th Parliament, entitled Mining in Developing Countries - Corporate Social Responsibility.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hold a meeting on the human rights situation in Iran.

 

The Chair informed the Subcommittee of his resignation as Chair.

Accordingly, pursuant to Standing Order 106(3), the Clerk of the Subcommittee presided over the election of a Chair.

 

It was agreed, — That Jason Kenny be elected Chair of the Subcommittee.

 

At 12:18 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
