The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Norman Doyle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Dave Batters, Barry Devolin, Norman Doyle, Meili Faille, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Ed Komarnicki, Bill Siksay and Hon. Andrew Telegdi.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Blair Wilson and Nicole Demers for Raymond Gravel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Penny Becklumb, Analyst; Kristen Douglas, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Lisa Cochrane; Doug Cochrane; Marion Galbraith; Michelle Vallière; Guy Vallière; Suzanne Rouleau; Denise Tessier; Pauline Merrette. Canadian War Brides: Melynda Jarratt, Historian. Lost Canadian Organization: Don Chapman.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 1, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Loss of Canadian Citizenship for the years 1947, 1977 and 2007.
 

Lisa Cochrane, Marion Galbraith, Michelle Vallière and Doug Cochrane made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Melynda Jarratt, Suzanne Rouleau, Denise Tessier and Pauline Merette made statements and, with Don Chapman, answered questions.

 

At 12:54 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:57 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Jim Karygiannis, it was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration study the issue of refugees from Iraq; that the Committee invite expert witnesses, stakeholders and community groups to appear before the Committee; and, that Members of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration provide to the Clerk of the Committee the names and contact information of prospective witnesses by Tuesday, June 5, 2007.

 

Jim Karygiannis moved, — That the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration order that the Department of Citizenship and Immigration provide the Committee with a complete copy of Joe Taylor's application for Canadian citizenship and all other documents related to this application within 30 days of this motion being adopted by the Committee; that the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration discuss the application and any related documents at an in Camera meeting; and that CIC officials appear before the Committee regarding the application at an in camera meeting.

 

By unanimous consent, the motion was allowed to stand.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
