Meeting No. 43

Tuesday, December 1st, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Ray Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Roy Bailey, Ray Bonin, Bill Casey, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Stan Dromisky, Paul Mercier, Lee Morrison.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Pacific Railway: Faye Ackermans, General Manager; Safety and Regulatory Affairs; From the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers: Georges Hucker; From the Canadian National: Michel Huart, System General Attorney; Achille Ferrusi, Assistant Vice-President; Safety and Regulatory Affairs; Don Watts, System Coordinator, Safety and Regulatory Affairs; From the United Transportation Union: Tim S. Secord, Director; Canadian Legislative; From the Railway Association of Canada: R.H. Ballantyne, President; Mike Lowenger, Vice-President; From the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees: Gary D. Housch, Vice-President.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-58, An Act to amend the Railway Safety Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act, pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Friday, November 20, 1998.

F. Ackerman made an opening statement and answered questions.

M. Huart made an opening statement and, with Achille Ferrusi and Don Watts, answered questions.
