The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith, Mark Strahl and John Williamson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Public Health Association: Debra Lynkowski, Chief Executive Officer; Ian Culbert, Director, Communications and Development. Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada: Ida Thomas, Chair; Craig Larsen, Executive Director. Canadian Alliance of Community Health Centre Associations: Jane Moloney, Chairperson; Scott Wolfe, Federal Coordinator.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Colin Carrie, it was agreed, — That in relation to the study of health promotion and disease prevention, the proposed budget in the amount of $38,200 be adopted.

 

Anne Minh-Thu Quach moved, — That the Committee immediately undertake a study of the impact of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union on the Canadian health system and on the cost of drugs; that witnesses be heard before the Committee for at least one meeting; and that the Committee report its findings to the House of Commons.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Mark Strahl moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 3:41 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:42 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 3:59 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:00 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, October 3, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of health promotion and disease prevention.
 

Jane Moloney and Scott Wolfe, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, Debra Lynkowski and Ida Thomas made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
