The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Libby Davies, Parm Gill, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Opitz for John Williamson, Hon. Judy Sgro for Hon. Hedy Fry and Robert Sopuck for Colin Carrie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Health: Catherine MacLeod, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Products and Food Branch; Hasan Hutchinson, Director General, Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Public Health Agency of Canada: Kim Elmslie, Director General, Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Nancy Edwards, Scientific Director, Institute of Population and Public Health; Philip Sherman, Scientific Director, Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Analysts, who have been retained by the Committee, be tasked with preparing a summary of evidence regarding chronic diseases related to aging.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee extend its study on health promotion and disease prevention by two (2) meetings and that witnesses be heard on the topic of obesity.

 

At 3:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:45 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, October 3, 2011, the Committee commenced its study of health promotion and disease prevention.
 

Catherine MacLeod, Kim Elmslie, Nancy Edwards and Philip Sherman made statements and, with Hasan Hutchinson, answered questions.

 

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
