The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in camera at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 228, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Marie-Claude Morin, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dan Albas, Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, Joyce Bateman, Anne-Marie Day, Mylène Freeman, Roxanne James, Marie-Claude Morin, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Royal Galipeau for Wai Young and Joyce Murray for Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Mariane Beaudin, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Public Service Alliance of Canada: Andrée Côté, Women's and Human Rights Officer, National Programs Section. Rosalie-Jetté School: Ellen Dubé, Educational Counsellor. Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women: Stefanie Lomatski, Executive Director; Bailey Reid, Chair, Public Engagement Committee.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee conduct a study of sexual harassment in workplaces in the federal jurisdiction; the impact and cost of sexual harassment; whether the current complaint/reporting channels of federal organizations are effective in addressing sexual harassment; whether current policies - Treasury Board and organization specific policies - should be amended or improved; and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure convene to develop a witness list for this study and set a date for its commencement.

 

At 3:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:40 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of improving economic prospects for Canadian girls.
 

Andrée Côté and Ellen Dubé, by videoconference from Montréal, Québec, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:41 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Stefanie Lomatski and Bailey Reid made statements and answered questions.

 

Niki Ashton moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee invite the Minister for Status of Women Canada to appear, no later than Wednesday, June 13, 2012, to discuss the 2012 Budget and the 2012-2013 Report on Plans and Priorities for Status of Women Canada; that the Minister's opening statement not exceed ten (10) minutes; and that the Minister's appearance be televised.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Susan Truppe moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
