The Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs met at 8:47 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the President, Greg Kerr, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Eve Adams, Rob Anders, Sean Casey, Joe Daniel, Réjean Genest, Greg Kerr, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Irene Mathyssen, Annick Papillon, Peter Stoffer and Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst. House of Commons: Marc-Olivier Girard, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Vimy Foundation: David Houghton, President. Juno Beach Centre Association: Susan Mousseau, Director; Kevin Eyre, Associate Director. EF Educational Tours Canada: Greg Owen, Vice-President, Public Affairs and Event Tours; David Robinson, National Student Tour Coordinator. Army Cadet League of Canada: Terence Whitty, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of commemorative celebrations in the twenty-first century.
 

Sean Casey moved, — That the Committee suspends its current study on “commemorating veterans” and commence hearings into the impact of the recent decision by the Conservative government to cut over 200 million dollars from the Veteran Affairs department, and that the Committee specifically assess the impact these cuts will have on programs and services to our veterans and the impact these cuts will have on staff and, that the Committee report back its findings to the House.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 3.

 

At 8:49 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:56 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 8:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:14 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee reimburse expenses for the witnesses scheduled to appear at today's meeting.

 

It was agreed, — That the scheduled visit to the Canadian War Museum on Thursday, October 27, 2011, be cancelled.

 

It was agreed, — That a meeting devoted to Committee business be scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, 2011.

 

At 9:25 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
