The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

Acting Members present: Diane Bourgeois for Luc Malo and Hon. Anita Neville for Joyce Murray.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marie Chia, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise: Alan Bernstein, Executive Director. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Stefano Bertozzi, Director, Global Health HIV. International Consortium on Anti-Virals: Jeremy Carver, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer; Patrick Michaud, Chairman of the Board of Directors. University of Manitoba: Keith Fowke, Professor, Departments of Medical Microbiology and Community Health Sciences. University of Western Ontario: Ted Hewitt, Vice-President, Research and International Relations. International Centre for Infectious Diseases: Heather Medwick, Acting President and Chief Executive Officer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, the Committee resumed its study on the cancellation of the HIV Vaccine Manufacturing Facility under Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative.
 

Stefano Bertozzi, Alan Bernstein, Heather Medwick, Jeremy Carver, Keith Fowke and Ted Hewitt made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

Carolyn Bennett moved, — That the Committee hold one extra meeting on Thursday, April 22, 2010 on the cancellation of the HIV vaccine manufacturing facility under Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative and invite Minister Leona Aglukkaq, Minister Vic Toews, Minister Tony Clement, Dr. David Butler-Jones, Dr. Frank Plummer and Dr. Joe Kennelly to appear before the Committee on that date.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
