The Subcommittee on Food Safety of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 4:02 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

Members of the Subcommittee present: Malcolm Allen, David Anderson, André Bellavance, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Hon. Wayne Easter, Larry Miller and Bev Shipley.

Acting Members present: James Bezan for David Anderson and Kirsty Duncan for Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

Other Members present: Brian Storseth.

In attendance: House of Commons: Jean-François Lafleur, Committee Clerk . Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst ; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

Witnesses: As an individual: Kumanan Wilson, Associate Professor, University of Ottawa, Canada Research Chair in Public Health Policy. University of Ottawa: Amir Attaran, Professor, Institute of Population Health. Option consommateurs: Anu Bose, Head, Ottawa Office; François Décary-Gilardeau, Analyst, Agri-food. Toxin Alert Inc.: Mike Espy, Chairman; William T. (Bill) Bodenhamer, President and Chief Executive Officer; Edward Petroff, Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Order of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food made Thursday, February 12, 2009 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the Subcommittee resumed its study of food safety.

Kumanan Wilson, Amir Attaran, Anu Bose, François Décary-Gilardeau and Mike Espy made statements and, with Bill Bodenhamer and Edward Petroff, answered questions.

At 5:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:43 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Subcommittee commenced consideration of a draft report.

At 7:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 9:38 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:06 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:12 p.m., the sitting resumed.

It was agreed, — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the Standing Committee.

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analysts be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee append to its report any dissenting or supplementary opinions provided that it is no longer that the report itself, and that it be submitted electronically in both official languages to the Clerk of the Subcommittee, no later than June 11, 2009.

At 11:37 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
