The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Shelly Glover, Monique Guay and Richard Nadeau.

 

Acting Members present: Jacques Gourde for Daniel Petit, Claude Gravelle for Yvon Godin, Ed Komarnicki for Pierre Lemieux, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon for Hon. Michael D. Chong, Glen Douglas Pearson for Pablo Rodriguez, Devinder Shory for Royal Galipeau and Borys Wrzesnewskyj for Lise Zarac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Acadia University: Robert Perrins, Dean, Faculty of Arts; Janice Best, Director, Department of Languages and Literatures. University of Alberta: Donald Ipperciel, Assistant Dean to Research, Saint-Jean Campus. University of Calgary: Dan Maher, Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities; Ozouf Amedegnato, Assistant Professor, Department of French, Italian and Spanish. Simon Fraser University: Claire Trépanier, Acting Director, Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs; Danielle Arcand, Associate Director, Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on the federal government's support for post-secondary institutions and their efforts in promoting bilingualism in Canada.
 

Claire Trépanier and Danielle Arcand made statements and answered questions.

 

Janice Best made a statement and, with Robert Perrins, answered questions.

 

Donald Ipperciel made a statement and answered questions.

 

Dan Maher made a statement and, with Ozouf Amedegnato, answered questions.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
