The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Hon. Scott Brison, Ron Cannan, John Cannis, Serge Cardin, Claude Guimond, Richard M. Harris, Ed Holder, Peter Julian, Gerald Keddy, Lee Richardson and Mario Silva.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Holden, Analyst; Jennifer Paul, Analyst. House of Commons: Carmen DePape, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Don Stephenson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade Policy and Negotiations; Deborah Lyons, Director General, North America Commercial Affairs; Martin Moen, Director, North America Commercial Affairs; Callie Stewart, Deputy Director, Technical Barriers and Regulations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, March 5, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of Canada-United States Trade Relations.
 

Don Stephenson made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Peter Julian, it was agreed, — That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on International Trade hold a two-hour meeting on Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), concerning the recent filing of a Notice of Intent by Dow AgroSciences with regards to the banning of lawn and garden pesticides in the province of Quebec and concerning a similar filing by AbitibiBowater in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee adopt the draft schedule detailing its work for the coming months, as prepared by the Committee analyst, with the understanding that this schedule may be modified in the future to respond to current events.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
