Meeting No. 7

Thursday, March 5, 2009

The Standing Committee on International Trade met in camera at 10:16 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Hon. Scott Brison, Ron Cannan, John Cannis, Serge Cardin, Claude Guimond, Richard M. Harris, Ed Holder, Peter Julian, Lee Richardson and Mario Silva.

Acting Members present: Sylvie Boucher for Gerald Keddy, Peter Goldring for Gerald Keddy and Hon. Shawn Murphy for Hon. Scott Brison.

Associate Members present: Malcolm Allen.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Holden, Analyst . House of Commons: Carmen DePape, Procedural Clerk.

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Louis Marcotte, Director, European Union Commercial Relations.

Delegation: European Parliament: Ignasi Guardans Cambó, Vice-Chair, International Trade Committee; Barbara Melis, Administrator, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE); Michael Topping, Principal Administrator, Secretariat of the International Trade Committee. Delegation of the European Commission to Canada: Giovanni Di Girolamo, Acting Head.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on International Trade conduct a study on Canada-US trade relations and travel to Washington D.C. as soon as possible in order to meet with members of the United States Congress and Obama-Biden Administration to discuss key issues such as, but not limited to: Country of origin labeling, the 2010 Olympics, Northern Border and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the European Parliament

Louis Marcotte made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:20 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:26 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee met with a delegation from the European Parliament.

Ignasi Guardans Cambó made a statement and, with the other delegates, answered questions.

At 12:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
