The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in a televised session at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Hon. Helena Guergis, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Yasmin Ratansi, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Glen Douglas Pearson for Hon. Belinda Stronach.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Julie Cool, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Finance: Robert Wright, Deputy Minister; Mireille Éthier, Senior Chief.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committe on September 26, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Gender-Based Analysis.
 

Robert Wright made a statement and, with Mireille Éthier, answered questions.

 

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 7, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of the Potential impact of recent funding and program changes at Status of Women Canada.
 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on April 17, 2007, the Committee commenced its study on the Spending Orientations for Status of Women Canada and other agencies.
 

Joy Smith moved, — Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommend that the government orient its 2007 spending for Status of Women Canada and the various other Canadian government agencies to:

Address the crucial and pressing issue of violence towards women and girls;

Support the full participation of women in Canadian society;

Address the challenges women face by promoting projects that improve the situation of women in key areas such as women’s economic status;

And that the adoption of this motion be reported to the House forthwith.

 

Nicole Demers moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “participation” the following: “and promote the equality” and adding after the words “ economic status” the following: “and support groups working to that end, and advocacy groups in particular”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Nicole Demers and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Maria Minna, Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson — 6; NAYS: Patricia Davidson, Nina Grewal, Helena Guergis, Joy Smith, Bruce Stanton — 5.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Maria Minna, Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson — 6; NAYS: Patricia Davidson, Nina Grewal, Helena Guergis, Joy Smith, Bruce Stanton — 5.

 

At 5:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
