The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 11:15 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Judy Sgro, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patricia Davidson, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Maria Mourani, Hon. Anita Neville, Hon. Judy Sgro, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Blaine Calkins for Helena Guergis and Caroline St-Hilaire for Johanne Deschamps.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst; Lyne Casavant, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: University of Ottawa: Richard Poulin, Full Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology. University of New Brunswick: Leslie Ann Jeffrey, Associate Professor, Department of History and Politics.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Irene Mathyssen moved, — That, in consideration of the funding cuts announced September 25, 2006, that House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommends the government continue funding all activites of Status of Women Canada at the 2005-2006 level or higher and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House forthwith.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and the result of the vote was announced: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the affirmative.

Accordingly, the motion was agreed to.

 

Irene Mathyssen moved, — That, in consideration of the new mandate of the Women's Program of Status of Women, effective September 27, 2006, the House of Commons Standing Commitee on the Status of Women recommends the government reinstates the previous mandate for the five years and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion ot the House forthwith.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and the result of the vote was announced: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the affirmative.

Accordingly, the motion was agreed to.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 21st, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of human trafficking.
 

Richard Poulin and Leslie Jeffrey made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
