The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 9:12 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Judy Sgro, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Diane Bourgeois, Patricia Davidson, Nina Grewal, Helena Guergis, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Maria Mourani, Hon. Anita Neville, Hon. Judy Sgro, Joy Smith, Bruce Stanton and Hon. Belinda Stronach.

 

Acting Members present: Rod Bruinooge for Nina Grewal and Colin Mayes for Helena Guergis.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Louise M. Thibault, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Sandra Ginnish, Director General, Treaties, Research, International and Gender Equality Branch; Holly King, Acting Director, Women's Issues and Gender Equality Directorate. Department of Justice: Christine Aubin, Counsel, Legal Services.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Irene Mathyssen moved, — That,

Whereas Canada ranks 42nd in the world among democracies in terms of women’s representation in the national legislature, after Pakistan and Portugal;

Whereas only 64 seats of 308 in the House of Commons are held by women;

Whereas fewer women candidates ran in the last election than in 1993;

Whereas financing and electoral reform have greatly improved representation of women in other countries;

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on the Status of Women undertake the study of the financing and electoral reform that would increase representation of women in the House of Commons.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, the motion was allowed to stand.

 

It was agreed, — That, in the fall session, the Committee focus on human trafficking and economic security of senior women.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on matrimonial real property rights of Aboriginal women.
 

At 10:07, the Committee proceeded to sit in a televised session.

 

The Minister made a statement and, with Sandra Ginnish and Holly King, answered questions.

 

At 10:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
