The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, James Bezan, Ken Boshcoff, Hon. Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, Jacques Gourde, Hon. Charles Hubbard and Larry Miller.

 

Acting Members present: Joe Preston for Barry Devolin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics; Hon. Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (International Trade): John Gero, Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade Policy and Negotiations Branch. Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Steve Verheul, Chief Agriculture Negotiator, Negotiations and Multilateral Trade Policy Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed a briefing on the Supply Management System.
 

The Ministers made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business in camera.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee limit the number of witnesses to four at the table at one time.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk and researchers prepare draft travel plans for the Committee's cross Canada hearings on the Agricultural Framework Policy for decision on the return of the Committee in March.

 

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
