The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Colin Mayes, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Steven Blaney, Rod Bruinooge, Jean Crowder, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Colin Mayes, Hon. Anita Neville, Todd Norman Russell and Brian Storseth.

 

Acting Members present: Gary Merasty for Hon. Larry Bagnell.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Jerome Berthelette, Principal; Ronnie Campbell, Assistant Auditor General. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Jeff Goldie, Executive Director, Federal Treaty Negotiation Office, British Columbia; Michel Roy, Assistant Deputy Minister, Claims and Indian Government.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the British Columbia Treaty Process.
 

Ronnie Campbell and Michel Roy made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:39 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:45 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Jean Crowder moved, — That the committee invite officials from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to appear before the committee to respond to the findings and recommendations from the 2006 Report of the Cree-Naskapi Commission.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “Commission” the following: “and that the Committee keep a list of its past studies and activities that could benefit from similar follow-up meetings, to be brought forward by committee members as Notices of Motion ”.

 

On motion of Jean Crowder, it was agreed, — That the committee invite officials from the Department of Public Safety to appear before the committee to respond to the findings and recommendations with regards to First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from the Annual Report of the Office of the Correctional Investigator 2005-2006.

 

Marc Lemay moved, — That the Committee receive a report from officials at the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, every six weeks, on the situation in Pikangikum, Kashechewan and Kitcisakik.

Debate arose thereon.

 

On motion of Gary Merasty, it was agreed, — That the Committee receive a written and oral report from officials at the Department of Indian and Northern Development, within two months, on the situation in Pikangikum, Kashechewan and Kitcisakik, recognizing that the Committee has only studied the Pikangikum location.

 

At 1:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
