The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Hon. Don Boudria, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Don Boudria, Claude Drouin, Yvon Godin, Christian Jobin, James Lunney, Marcel Proulx, Scott Reid, Benoît Sauvageau, Raymond Simard and Yolande Thibeault.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Stephen Owen, Minister of Public Works and Government Services.

 

Witnesses: Department of Public Works and Government Services: Guy Bédard, Supporting Assistant Deputy Minister, Government Information Services Branch; Nicole Bourget, Assistant Deputy Minister, Government Information Services Branch. Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission: Jacques Langlois, Director General, Broadcasting Policy Group; Marc O'Sullivan, Executive Director, Broadcasting Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f), the Committee commenced its study on the Impact of the suspension of federal government advertising activities on media operating in a minority environment in Canada.
 

The Minister made an opening statement and with Nicole Bourget answered questions.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f), the Committee commenced its study on the Broadcasting and Availability of the Debates and Proceedings of Parliament in Both Official Languages by CPAC
 

Marc O'Sullivan made an opening statement and with Jacques Langlois answered questions.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Transport to appear to discuss the situation regarding Air Canada and the Official Languages Act.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite representatives from Radio-Canada to discuss their involment with La dictée des Amériques and other francophone cultural events.

 

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
