Meeting No. 17

Tuesday, April 1st, 2003

The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, John Bryden, Yvon Godin, Benoît Sauvageau, Raymond Simard and Yolande Thibeault.

Acting Members present: John Williams for Scott Reid.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, analyst.

Witnesses: As Individual: John O'Neill, Board Member of the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert and Former Deputy Minister of Culture and Multiculturalism (Alberta). From the “Association canadienne-française de l’Alberta": Ernest Chauvet, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(d), a briefing session on the concerns of the francophone community of Alberta about a proposal of redrawing the constituencies of this province and on the concept of "community of interest" that comes from the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act.

John O'Neill and Ernest Chauvet made statements and answered questions.

At 10:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
