Meeting No. 27

Tuesday, May 6, 2003

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Judi Longfield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Libby Davies, John Finlay, Ovid Jackson, Judi Longfield, Monte Solberg and Diane St-Jacques.

Acting Members present: Sébastien Gagnon for Suzanne Tremblay and Rosemary Ur for Raymond Simard.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin and Kevin Kerr, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Human Resources Development: Wayne G. Wouters, Deputy Minister; Maryantonett Flumian, Associate Deputy Minister; Janet Milne, Assistant Deputy Minister, Financial and Administrative Services; Charles Nixon, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Insurance; Phil Jensen, Assistant Deputy Minister, Employment Programs Branch; Nada Semaan, Director General, Strategic Direction Branch, Income Security Program; David Cogliati, Director General, Canada Student Loans Programs.

The Committee proceeded to its Order of Reference dated Wednesday, February 26, 2003, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2004.

The Chair called vote 1 and 5 under Human Resources Development.

Wayne Wouters made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 11:44 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
