Friday, May 9, 2003

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 1:40 p.m. this day, in the Port Royal Room, Château Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel, Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté, research officer.

Witnesses: From the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association Ltd.: Rory McLellan, Executive Director; Keith Paugh, President. From the Maritimes Fishermen's Union: Ron Cormier, President; Sandy Siegel, Executive Secretary; Réginald Comeau, Provincial Coordinator. From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans - Gulf Region: James Jones, Regional Director General; Dr. Mikio Moriyasu, Head, Snow Crab Section. From the New Bandon Fishermen’s Association: Paul Jagoe; Michel Arseneau; Gerald Haché. From the Ecology Action Centre: Mark Butler, Marine Issues Co-ordinator.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Atlantic Fisheries Issues (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, May 6, 2003, Meeting No. 32).

Keith Paugh, Rory McLellan and Sandy Siegel made statements and, with Réginald Comeau and Ron Cormier, answered questions.

James Jones and Dr. Mikio Moriyasu made statements and answered questions.

Michel Arseneau and Paul Jagoe made statements and answered questions.

Mark Butler made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:39 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
