Meeting No. 19

Tuesday, March 18, 2003

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Gérard Binet, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Claude Duplain, Mark Eyking, Marcel Gagnon, Howard Hilstrom, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, analyst; Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Mark Corey, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch; Steve Verheul, Acting Chief Agriculture Negotiator, International Trade Policy Directorate. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Ian Burney, Director, Trade Remedies Division. From the Dairy Farmers of Ontario: Gordon Coukell, Chairman of the Board; Bob Bishop, General Manager. From the "Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec": Jean Grégoire, Chair; André Belzile, Assistant to Director General.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the World Trade Organization decision on the Canadian dairy export policy.

Ian Burney, Mark Corey and Steve Verheul made opening statements and answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:12 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Committee considered a draft budget.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the proposed operational budget of the Committee in the amount of $34,400.00 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the World Trade Organization decision on the Canadian dairy export policy.

Gordon Coukell, Jean Grégoire and André Belzile made opening statements and answered questions.

At 1:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
