Meeting No. 63

Thursday, May 2, 2002

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in a videoteleconference session, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Ovid Jackson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bev Desjarlais, Jim Gouk, Ovid Jackson, Mario Laframboise, Marcel Proulx, Alex Shepherd.

Associate Member present: Lynne Yelich.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher; June Dewetering, researcher; Grant Purves, researcher.

Witnesses: From the Amalgamated Transit Union Canadian Council: Ken Foster, Canadian Director; Gary R. Dorion, President/ Business Agent, Local 1415; Randy Graham, International Vice President and General Executive Board Member; Len Munter, President/ Business Agent, Local 1374. From the United Steelworkers of America: Lawrence McBrearty, National Director; Dennis Dunster, Staff Representative. From the National Association of Professional Drivers (Kamloops, B.C.): Darren Liebrecht, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Truckers Hours of Service, safety concerns and transborder/border crossing issues, and their impact on the Canadian trucking industry.

Ken Foster, Lawrence McBrearty and Darren Liebrecht made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
