Meeting No. 5

Wednesday, May 16, 2001

The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 3:25 p.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Carolyn Bennett, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Wendy Lill, Tony Tirabassi.

Acting Members present: Paul Crête for Robert Lanctôt.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie MacKenzie and Bill Young, researchers.

Witnesses: From the Institut Roeher Institute: Cam Crawford, Acting Executive Director. From the "Confédération des organismes de personnes handicapées du Québec": Chloé Serradori, Executive Director; Mercedes Benegbi. From the Advocacy Resouce Centre for the Handicaped: Harry Beatty. From the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada: Nickie Cassidy, National Social Action Volunteer; Helen Wagle, Manager, Social Action. From the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health: Phil Upshall, Chair. From the Office of the Commissioner of Review Tribunals Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security: Tina Head, Senior Counsel, Legal Services Unit. From the Human Resources Development Canada: Paul Migus, Assistant Deputy Minister, Income Security Programs; David Cogliati, Director General, Central Operations, Income Security Programs; Nancy Lawand, Director, CPP Program Policy.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(c) Study of the matters relating to the proposing, promoting, monitoring and assessing of initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian Society: Round table on disability income support.

At 3:44 p.m., the Sub-Committee proceeded to sit in public.

At 3:45 p.m., Cam Crawford, Chloé Seradori, Harry Beatty, Nickie Cassidy, Phil Upshall, Tina Head and Paul Migus made statements and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
