Meeting No. 55

Thursday, May 23, 2002

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 4:08 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, John Bryden, John Finlay, Mac Harb, Rahim Jaffer, Sophia Leung, Philip Mayfield, Joe Peschisolido, Beth Phinney, Alex Shepherd and John Williams.

Acting Members present: Ghislain Lebel for Odina Desrochers; Val Meredith for Paul Forseth; Raymond Simard for Shawn Murphy; Antoine Dubé for Gilles-A. Perron; Gerald Keddy for Greg Thompson.

Associate Members present: Gerald Keddy and Val Meredith.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of theLibrary of Parliament: Brian O'Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Human Rights Commission: Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay, Chief Commissioner; Murielle Brazeau, Deputy Secretary General, Operations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to considern the Motion of Beth Phinney, M.P., dated March 19, 2002, with regard to the Government Response to the 21st Report of the Public Accounts Committee on the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal of February 9, 1999.

The Chair presented the Seventh Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure which is as follows:

Pursuant to a motion of Pat Martin adopted by the Standing Committee on Tuesday, May 21, 2002, with respect to the Report of the Auditor General to the Minister of Public Works on Three contracts awarded to Groupaction,

It was agreed to recommend that the Auditor General report to the Committee for thirty minutes on this matter at the meeting already scheduled for Thursday, May 30, 2002 or on Tuesday, May 28, 2002.

The Report of the Sub-Committee was adopted.

Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay made a statement and with the other witness, answered questions.

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
