Meeting No. 55

Monday, April 29, 2002

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in St. John’s, Loyola Hearn, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rodger Cuzner, Christiane Gagnon, Loyola Hearn and Wendy Lill.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Cofman, intern; Joseph Jackson, Research Officer.  Consultant:  David Black.

Witnesses: From the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation: Leo Furey, President. From the Producers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador: Paul Pope, Vice-President, Newfoundland Independent Film makers Cooperative; Ken Pittmen, Director. From the New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador: Jack Harris, MHA, Leader. From the St. John's International Women's Film and Video Festival: Katie Nicholson, Spokesperson. From the Eastern Edge Gallery: Mike Hickey, Representative.  As Individual: Jim Maunder, Visual artist. From the CHMR-FM: Ernst Rollmann, Program Director; Michael Rossiter, News Director.  As Individual: Greg Malone, Actor. From the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland: Anita Best, Chair; John Hutton, Associate. From the St. John's Folk Arts Council: Stan Pickett, Treasurer. From the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir: Susan Knight, Founder and Artistic Director.  As Individual: Monique Tobin. From the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador: Heather MacLellan, Assistant Deputy Minister, Tourism, Culture and Recreation; Eleanor Dawson, Cultural Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the State of the Canadian Broadcasting System.  (See Minutes of Proceeding, dated Thursday, November 8, 2001, Meeting No. 26).

In the unavoidable absence of the Chairman, Loyola Hearn took the Chair.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 10:07 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:13 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
