Meeting No. 34

Tuesday, September 25, 2001

The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Scott Brison, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Roger Gallaway, Jason Kenney, Sophia Leung, John McCallum, Lorne Nystrom, Pauline Picard, Gary Pillitteri.

Acting Members present: Judy Sgro for Sue Barnes, Karen Redman for Nick Discepola, Paul Szabo for Albina Guarnieri Garry Breitkreuz for Richard Harris, Rahim Jaffer for Joe Peschisolido, Bernard Bigras for Yvan Loubier.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Blayne Haggart Marc-André Pigeon, Researchers.

Witnesses: From Business Council on National Issues: Thomas d'Aquino, President & Chief Executive; David Stewart-Patterson, Senior Vice-President, Policy and Communications; Sam T. Boutziouvis, Vice-President, International Trade and Global Economics. From Canadian Nature Federation: Christie Spence, Co-manager, Wildlands Campaign. From Green Budget Coalition: Robert Hornung, Policy Director, Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development; Joan Kuyek, Executive Director, Mining Watch Canada; Sara Wilson, Manager. From World Wildlife Fund Canada: Julia Langer, Director, International Programs.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83(1), the Committee continued its study on Pre-Budget Consultations.

Thomas D’Aquino made a statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Rahim Jaffer moved, -That, with respect to the tragic events of September 11 in New York City and, pursuant to Standing Order 108, this Committee send for the Commissioner of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency to appear before the Committee at the earliest possible opportunity.

And debate arising thereon;

The result of the vote having been announced:

YEAS: 8

NAYS: 8

The Chair declined to cast his vote.

Rahim Jaffer moved, -That, with respect to the tragic events of September 11 in New York City and, pursuant to Standing Order 108, the Committee send for the Minister of National Revenue to appear before the Committee at the earliest possible opportunity.

And debate arising thereon;

The result of the vote having been announced:

YEAS: 8

NAYS: 8

The Chair declined to cast his vote.

At 10:25 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
