Meeting No. 56

Wednesday, June 7, 2000

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Andy Scott, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Chuck Cadman, Aileen Carroll, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, Jacques Saada, Andy Scott and Pierrette Venne.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Witness: From the House of Commons: Jay Hill, MP for Prince George--Peace River.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, May 2, 2000, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-223, An Act to amend the Witness Protection Program Act and to make a related and consequential amendment to another Act (protection of spouses whose life is in danger) be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The witness made an opening statement and answered questions.

It was agreed, - That the request of the Sub-Committee on Organized Crime for a provisional budget and the request for authorization to travel be approved.

At 4:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
