Meeting No. 16

Monday, December 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Pierre Brien, John Cannis, Walt Lastewka, Charlie Penson, Werner Schmidt and Susan Whelan.

Other Member present: Roger Gallaway.

 

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From "Action réseau consommateur": Nathalie St-Pierre, Director general; Philippe Tousignant, Analyst, Policy and Regulatory Affairs, Telecommunications, Information Highway and Broadcasting. From Bell Canada: Sheridan Scott, Chief Regulatory Officer; Linda C. Gervais, Vice-President, Federal Government Relations. From TELUS Corporation: Willie Grieve, Vice-President, Government and Regulatory Affairs. From the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association: Roger Poirier, Executive Vice President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, October 28, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-276, An Act to amend the Competition Act, 1998 (negative option marketing) (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, November 18, 1999, Meeting No. 7).

The witnesses from "Action réseau consommateur" made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:46 a.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 11:51 a.m. the sitting resumed.

Sheridan Scott made a statement.

At 11:57 a.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 12:14 p.m. the sitting resumed.

Sheridan Scott resumed her statement. Willie Grieve made a statement. Roger Poirier made a statement. The witnesses answered questions.

At 1:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
