MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 39

Thursday, June 8, 2000

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Dennis Mills, Alex Shepherd.

Acting Member present: Roy Cullen for Bryon Wilfert.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson and Terry Thomas, Researchers. Consultants: David Black and Kevin Burns.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

The Committee proceeded to consider the motion of Caroline St-Hilaire.

On motion of Caroline St-Hilaire, it was agreed,-That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage review , upon its return from summer recess, review the demands of various women’s group in the context of the World Women’s March 2000; and that the Researchers prepare background materials on this issue.

The Committee proceeded to consider the draft report on its Canadian Book Industry Study.

It was agreed, - That the Committee provide a title to the Clerk by Tuesday, June 13, 2000.

It was agreed, - That the Committee request a Government Response to the Report, pursuant to Standing Order 109.

It was agreed, - That the draft report, as amended, be adopted as the Committee's second report and that the Chair present the Report to the House.

It was agreed, - That the Committee print 1500 copies of its Report in tumble format.

It was agreed, - That a News Release be issued and a News Conference organized.

It was agreed, - That dissenting opinions be submitted to the Clerk by Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at 12:00 p.m. in both official languages.

It was agreed, - That the Committee retain the professional services of a French Editor to review the French version of the text for a maximum of $2 500.00 for the period between June 8 to June 12, 2000.

At 12:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
