Wednesday, May 17, 2000

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 3:43 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles L. Caccia, Marlene Catterall, David Chatters, Nick Discepola, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Dennis Gruending, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Karen Kraft Sloan, Walt Lastewka, Julian Reed, Paddy Torsney.

Acting Members present: Aileen Carroll for David Pratt; Eric Lowther for Gurmant Grewal and Howard Hilstrom for Rahim Jaffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Researcher; Christine Labelle, Researcher; Linda Webster, Researcher.

Appearing: The Honourable David Anderson, Minister of the Environment.

Witnesses: From Environment Canada: Alan Nymark, Deputy Minister; Sid Gershberg, President, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency; Gérald Derouin, Director General, Finance.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, February 29, 2000, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 being read as follows:

Ordered - That Votes 1, 5, 10 and 15 under ENVIRONMENT be referred to the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.

The Chair called vote 1.

The Minister made a statement and with Alan Nymark answered questions.

At 5:44 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
