The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Carolyn Bennett, presiding.

Member(s) of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Wendy Lill and The Hon. Andy Scott.

Acting Member(s) present: Ken Epp for Deborah Grey.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Bill Young, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Treasury Board of Canada: The Hon. Marcel Massé, President of the Treasury Board; From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada: The Hon. Jane Stewart, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

Witness(es): From the Treasury Board of Canada: Kay Stanley, Assistant Secretary, Employment Equity Division; Joan Ouellette, Director, Employment Equity Division. From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Cynthia Williams, Assistant Deputy Minister, Socio-Economic Policy and Programming and Program Re-design Sector;

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(c) study of matters relating to the proposing, promoting, monitoring and assessing of initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian Society

Hon. Marcel Massé made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

Hon. Jane Stewart and Cynthia Williams made an opening statement and answered questions.

Wendy Lill presented the report of Barbara Schoeber winner of the 1998 Centennial Flame Award entitled "With each step you take, you see a little further: the long way home of Walter Lawrence".

At 1:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
