Thursday, May 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:22 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, George Baker, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: George Baker, Yvan Bernier, Wayne Easter, Howard Hilstrom, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Bill Matthews and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Earl Wiseman, Director General, International Affairs Directorate, Fisheries Management and Nadia Bouffard, Legal Counsel. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Robert Rochon, Director General and Deputy Legal Advisor, Legal Affairs Bureau; Howard Strauss, Director, Oceans, Environmental and Economic Law Division.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, May 5, 1998, being read as follows:

Ordered, - That Bill C-27, An Act to amend the Coastal Fisheries Protection Act and the Canada Shipping Act to enable Canada to implement the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 Relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks and other international fisheries treaties or arrangements., be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The Parliamentary Secretary made a statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 9:58, Nancy Karetak-Lindell took the Chair.

At 10:24, the Chair, George Baker, took the Chair.

 

 

 

At 11:01 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
