Meeting No. 83

Thursday, November 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:07 a.m. o'clock this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Darrel Stinson, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Chuck Strahl for Bob Mills; Gurmant Grewal for Charlie Penson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Raymond Chan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific).

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Sarah Taylor, Deputy Director (Political-Economic) Southeast Asia Division (PSE).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to examine the situation in Indonesia.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witness, answered questions.

It was agreed, --That further to its motion of June 3, 1998, the Chair be authorized to engage the services of Mr. Louis Majeau to edit the French text of the Committee's draft report on Canada's policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament at an hourly rate of $70.00 to a maximum of 100 hours.

On motion of Gurmant Grewal it was agreed, --That the Minister of International Cooperation and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, be requested to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity, if possible no later than December 10, 1998, to address the Performance Review Report for CIDA, 1998

At 10:45 a.m. o'clock, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
