The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 12:01 p.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Jake Hoeppner, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Appearing: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: The Hon. Lyle Vanclief, Minister, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Michelle Comeau, Associate Deputy Minister; Ron Doering, President, Canadian Food Inspection Agency; Brian Morrissey, Assistant Deputy Minister, Research Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 108(2), and 81, and its Order of Reference of March 1, 1999 from the House, consideration of the Main Estimates, VOTES 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25, and Part III - Report on Plans and Priorities.

The Honourable Lyle Vanclief made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 1:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
