Tuesday, April 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:07 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 371, West Block, the Chair, Guy Saint-Julien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, John Bryden, Gordon Earle, John Finlay, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gerald Keddy, Derrek Konrad, Judi Longfield, Grant McNally, Bernard Patry, Guy Saint-Julien and Mike Scott.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mary C. Hurley and Jill Wherrett, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada: The Hon. Jane Stewart, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

Witnesses: From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada: Brent Dibartolo, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Gordon Shanks, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Strategic Direction; Cynthia Williams, Assistant Deputy Minister, Socio-Economic Policy and Programming and Program Re-Design.

The Order of Reference being read as follows:

That the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999: VOTES 1, 5, 10, 15, L20, L25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 under INDIAN AFFAIRS AND NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT, laid upon the table on February 26, 1998 be referred to the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:42 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:43 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed in camera to discuss future business.

At 12:50 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
