Meeting No. 22

Wednesday, April 22, 1998

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 3:43 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Guy Saint-Julien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Gordon Earle, John Finlay, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Derrek Konrad, Bernard Patry, Guy Saint-Julien and Bryon Wilfert.

Acting Member present: Joe Jordan for John Bryden

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett, Research Officer.

Witnesses: Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada: Cynthia Williams, Assistant Deputy Minister, Socio-Economic Policy and Programming and Program Re-Design; Glen Bailey, Director General, Economic Policy and Programming; Bob Watts, Assistant Deputy Minister, Lands and Trust Services; James Moore, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs; Bruce Myers, Director, Regional Analysis, Northern Affairs; Peter Wyse, Manager, Natural Resources, Lands and Trust Services.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Aboriginal Economic Development. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, March 24, 1998, Meeting No. 21)

Cynthia Williams, Bob Watts and James Moore made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:15 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:15 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed in camera for consideration of future business.

At 5:50 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
