At 4:51 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), it was agreed that the committee continue to sit.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

Motion

Pam Damoff moved, — That, pursuant to a motion passed on May 5, 2021, that the Public Safety Committee continue its study on Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism, that the meetings occur on June 14 and June 16, 2021, and that the Committee invite the National Council of Canadian Muslims and The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs to appear as witnesses on June 16, 2021.

Debate arose thereon.

At 5:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Amendment

Joël Lightbound moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “the meetings occur on June 14 and June 16, 2020” with the words “one meeting during the week of June 14, 2021”, and the words “on June 16, 2021” be replaced with “at that meeting”.

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Joël Lightbound and it was agreed to on the following recorded division:

YEAS: Bob Bratina, Pam Damoff, Earl Dreeshen, Darren Fisher, Jack Harris, Kamal Khera, Andréanne Larouche, Joël Lightbound, Glen Motz, Shannon Stubbs, Tako Van Popta — 11;

NAYS: — 0.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, pursuant to the motion adopted on May 5, 2021, the Committee continue its study on Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism; a meeting during the week of June 14, 2021 and, that the Committee invite the National Council of Canadian Muslims and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs to appear as witnesses at that meeting.

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to on the following recorded division:

On motion of Jack Harris, it was agreed, — That the committee publicly release all documents that were made available to the committee on June 3, 2021, pursuant to the motion adopted by the committee on May 5, 2021 regarding Correctional Service Canada’s transition to Structured Intervention Units, and that all additional documents regarding the same motion be made public as they are provided to the committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the committee on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, the committee commenced its study of the current situation in federal prisons in relation to Correctional Service Canada’s response to COVID-19, the implementation and operation of structured intervention units and reports of sexual coercion and violence in federal prisons.

Jane Sprott, Anthony N. Doob, Catherine Latimer and Jeff Wilkins made statements and answered questions.

Motion

Jack Harris moved, — That the committee resume the CSC study at a meeting during the week of June 14, 2021.

At 7:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
