The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in a televised session at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Chris Warkentin, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Dennis Bevington, Ray Boughen, Rob Clarke, Jean Crowder, Jonathan Genest-Jourdain, Carol Hughes, Brent Rathgeber, Kyle Seeback and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Dean Del Mastro for Greg Rickford.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Norah Kielland, Analyst; Tonina Simeone, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Karl Carisse, Senior Director, Innovation and Major Policy Transformation Directorate; Paul Salembier, General Counsel, Operations and Programs, Justice Canada. Department of Health: Debra Gillis, Acting Director General, Interprofessional Advisory and Program Support, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada. First Nations of Alberta Technical Services Advisory Group: Vaughn Paul, Chief Executive Officer. Tsuu T'ina First Nation: Regena Crowchild, Councillor.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 8, 2013, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill S-8, An Act respecting the safety of drinking water on First Nation lands.
 

Minister Valcourt made a statement and, with Debra Gillis, Paul Salembier and Karl Carisse, answered questions.

 

At 9:42 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:48 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Regena Crowchild and Vaughn Paul made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 37,000, for the study of Bill S-8, An Act respecting the safety of drinking water on First Nations lands, be adopted.

 

At 10:44 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
