MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 20

Wednesday, November 1, 2006

The Standing Committee on National Defence met in camera at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Vice-Chair, John Cannis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Dawn Black, Robert Bouchard, Blaine Calkins, John Cannis, Rick Casson, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Russ Hiebert and Hon. Joe McGuire.

Acting Members present: Brian Storseth for Laurie Hawn.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Third Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in:

The Subcommittee recommends that, in the context of its study of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the Committee:

Travel to Afghanistan as agreed to by this Subcommittee;

Require that the services of qualified interpreters be available to members during such travel; and

Devote one meeting to the status of women of Afghanistan.

The Subcommittee further recommends that, in the context of briefings on the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the Committee:

Request that the briefer’s time before the Committee be extended to 45 minutes; and

Request that more of the briefing session time be allocated to questioning.

A copy of the relevant Minutes of Proceedings (Meeting No. 3) is tabled.

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with the delegation of the Portfolio Committee on Defence from the Parliament of South Africa on November 6, 2006, at 3:30 p.m.

At 4:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
