Meeting No. 44

Thursday, May 4, 2000

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:35 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Gurmant Grewal, Francine Lalonde, Diane Marleau, Bernard Patry, Yves Rocheleau.

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Ted McWhinney; Eleni Bakopanos for Bob Speller; Lee Morrison for Darryl Stinson.

From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Society for International Health: Janet Hatcher Roberts, Executive Director. From the Mining Watch Canada: Joan Kuyek, National Coordinator. From the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada: Nazeer Aziz Ladhani, Chief Executive Officer. From the No Organization: H.E. Bolat K. Nurgaliyev, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Canada and the United States.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's foreign policy interests in South Caucasus and Central Asia (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, April 4, 2000, Meeting No. 35.).

Janet Hatcher Roberts, Joan Kuyek and Nazeer Aziz Ladhani each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:15 a.m., the sitting resumed.

H.E. Bolat K. Nurgaliyev made an opening statement and answered questions.

It was agreed - that the Committee would begin hearing witnesses on Bill C-19, the Crimes Against Humanity Act once the Bill has been referred to the Committee from the House of Commons notwithstanding the fact that some Committee Members may still be travelling on Committee business in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

It was agreed - that the Committee invite the Honourable Paul Martin, Minister of Finance, to appear to provide information on the G-20.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
