Carol Hughes

On December 10, 2019, Carol Hughes, who has served as the Member for Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing, Ontario since 2008, was appointed Assistant Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair of Committees of the Whole for a second time; she previously held this role in the 42nd Parliament. Mrs. Hughes is a member of the New Democratic Party.

During the 41st Parliament, Mrs. Hughes served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament and Vice-Chair of the Joint Parliamentary Health Caucus. She was also a member of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, as well as of the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities. In the course of the 40th Parliament, she was a member of several committees, including the Subcommittee on Neurological Diseases of the Standing Committee on Health.

Prior to being elected to the House of Commons, Mrs. Hughes worked as a representative for the Canadian Labour Congress.
