Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on Thursday, February 4, 2016, the Subcommittee proceeded to a briefing on the human rights situation in Burundi and Rwanda.

Marguerite Barankiste made a statement and, with Charles Nahimana and Emery-Patrick Ndabwunze, answered questions.

At 1:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:36 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on Thursday, February 4, 2016, the Subcommittee undertake a study on the human rights situation of the Uyghurs.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on Thursday, February 4, 2016, the Subcommittee undertake a study of Yezidis, Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities in Iraq.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on Thursday, February 4, 2016, the Subcommittee undertake a study on the state of the free press.

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hold one additional meeting on its study of the human rights situation in Burundi.

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hold additional meetings on its study of the current human rights situation of the Rohingya in Myanmar.

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Subcommittee, in consultation with the Chair, prepare a draft budget respecting the Subcommittee's proposed travel to Geneva, in relation to its study of Canada’s global engagement on human rights issues, particularly through the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, for consideration by the Subcommittee.

It was agreed, — That a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees be invited to appear in November 2018.

It was agreed, — That Members of the Subcommittee submit their lists of witnesses for the upcoming studies to the Clerk as soon as possible.

It was agreed, — That public meetings be televised whenever possible.

At 2:00 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
