APPENDIX F: UNITED NATIONS PEACE OPERATIONS FATALITIES (1999-2019)

 

The figure shows the annual number of United Nations (UN) personnel who have died on UN peace operations over the 1999 to 2019 period. It shows rising annual fatalities for the first 10 years of this period, with 39 in 1999 and 212 in 2009. The number of fatalities then fluctuated between 2010 and 2017, with an annual high of 173 and a low of 110, before falling to 98 personnel in 2018. The figure of 32 for 2019 reflects the January to March period. The figure also provides the annual number of UN personnel who were killed between 2013 and 2019 while serving on the UN’s Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. It shows a rise in fatalities, from 6 personnel in 2013 to 42 in 2017, before a decline to 22 in 2018. The figure of 18 for 2019 reflects the January to March period.
