Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, the Committee resumed its study of the full implementation of the Official Languages Act in the Canadian justice system.

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

At 4:39 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

Motion

Alupa A. Clarke moved, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to appear before the Committee on the new immigration targets as they relate to official languages.

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

Motion

François Choquette moved, — That the Committee write to the Minister of Canadian Heritage to ask for a written response explaining the delay in the appointment process for the Commissioner of Official Languages; and that the response be sent to the Committee by the end of 2017.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the debate be adjourned until Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

François Choquette gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee denounce the non-compliance with subsection 49(1) of the Official Languages Act regarding consultation with the official opposition leaders on the appointment of the new Commissioner of Official Languages; and that it report this to the House before the end of the year.

At 4:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
