The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:03 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Tyrone Benskin, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Kelly Block for Gary Ralph Schellenberger, Hon. Michael D. Chong for Nina Grewal and Hon. Hedy Fry for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst; Miguel Bernal-Castillero, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite Dr. Damon Noto, spokesperson for Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, and Ethan Gutmann, author of “The Slaughter: Mass Killings, Organ Harvesting, and China’s Secret Solution to Its Dissident Problem” to testify on October 21, 2014 on the subject of forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, political dissidents, and religious and ethnic minorities in China.

 

It was agreed, — Whereas, in Bangladesh attacks on religious minorities have been steadily on the increase;

Whereas, according to statistics from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist & Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), 485 households and 578 shops owned by Hindus in 32 districts of Bangladesh were vandalised since the recent general election schedule was announced on November 25 last year, along with 152 Hindu temples also being damaged;

Be it resolved that the Subcommittee on International Human Rights study the developing situation of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of the Human Rights Situation in Honduras, the Subcommittee proceed to the consideration of a draft report on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

 

It was agreed, — That Majed El Shafie be invited to provide an update on the persecution of religious minorities in Iraq by ISIL/Daesh.

 

It was agreed, — That witnesses be invited to appear on the subject of challenges faced by North Korean refugees.

 

At 1:42 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
